Flickr Finds ~ A Thing for Horses

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I haven’t written a Flickr Finds post in quite some time and Mrs. French’s set, “A Thing for Horses” is really beautiful.  I was never one of those “horse girls” growing up… you know the ones that had horse posters and toys, dreamed of taking riding lessons, and was caught up in the story of Black Beauty.  However, I’ve always been drawn to horses, perhaps because my grandfather grew up on a farm where his father broke in horses (among other things) for a living.  I love the calmness and stature of a horse in a field, content to simply roam and graze.  I slow down when I drive past a farm and am the first to point out in exclamation, “Look! Horses!” and wish I could pull over and go talk to them.  I love how their eyes always seem so expressive, and in a way seem to connect with you on an unspoken level of communication.  In these photos, I love how close she gets to the horses; how much their eyes are really the subject of the images rather than the overall animal.

On second thought, maybe I’m really a horse girl after all…

A Day in the White Mountains

Friday was quite an adventure.  We woke up at 4:30 to drive my parents to the airport for their own trip and had decided the night before to just keep on driving, either to the Berkshires or to New Hampshire.  I checked the weather and it was suppose to be slushy (snow and rain mix) in the Berkshires and just cloudy in the White Mountains, so we choose the later.  After the airport, we continued north and saw something I’m definitely not ready to see yet… snow.  We drove in a snowstorm for about an hour or two, until dawn broke and we crossed the border into New Hampshire.  We actually had ice across our front bumper when we parked.  But once we arrived in North Conway, all was well.

We first had breakfast at one of my favorite breakfast spots on the planet, Peaches.  The restaurant is located inside a small cottage, and the interior is quaint and homey, like you’re eating at a friend’s grandmother’s house.  Every table is covered in napkins set underneath a glass tabletop, with the napkins detailing past patron’s glowing reviews (and some illustrations) of their experience to Peaches.  They’re fun to read and to see how far away some people have visited from.  I got the pumpkin pancakes (yum yum) and Jeff got his usual two eggs, toast, sausage and homefries.  Some things just never change.

After breakfast we did a little bit of shopping and browsing, stopping in little stores along downtown North Conway including a favorite of ours, Zeb’s General Store.  After browsing the many aisles of maple syrup, jams & jellies, kitschy moose items and other New Hampshire gifts, we decided on some handmade soap and of course, penny candy.  I even made a furry friend outside the store.  We stopped by another favorite (just to look, not to ride) across the street, the Conway Scenic Railway.  The train station is antique, along with the trains that are still running and operational.  We took a train ride last year during the foliage season and it’s really the nicest way to relax and enjoy colors of a New England autumn.

After spending plenty of time in North Conway, we ventured out into the mountains and into Crawford Notch State Park.  The scenery was amazing: twists and turns through forests peppered with reds, oranges, yellows, and browns, rocky cliffs and mountain peaks in the distances as well as to our sides, and all the while the perfect driving soundtrack (here and here) for such a gorgeous autumn day.  We passed many trail heads and finally choose the trail towards Ripley Falls.  After hiking through a canopy of golden birches, colorful maples and tall pines we came upon Ripley Falls, a 100 foot waterfall.  It was breathtaking and certainly worth the hike (which really wasn’t a difficult one at that).

Our day trip to New Hampshire had the right amount of relaxing in a New England village, as well as being surrounded by expansive and colorful forests and mountains.  All in all it was perfect, except for one thing: it was definitely too short.  Next time we need to go for a week!

Making Applesauce ~ SouleMama

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I was grinning ear to ear reading SouleMama’s latest post about how to make applesauce.  The happenings that went on in that kitchen are too cute for words, and I love that something as simple as applesauce turns into a family event.  I was telling my sister only yesterday (who went picking recently and came home with 11 full pounds of apples) how simple it is to make applesauce (especially when you cooked more crisps, pies, etc. and you still have more apples).  Peel, slice, cook (add cinnamon if you wish) and ta-da!  Applesauce.  But having a few cute kids around is a great ingredient too!

bloom-grow-love

These photos from bloom-grow-love on Flickr capture the type of feeling I have today on a grey, autumn day.  These particular images are from her Polaroid set, which is really lovely and has an atmospheric feeling to it.  The photographer, Alicia Bock, has a wonderful website to view as well.

This Morning in the Garden

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

This morning I went outside to poke around the garden to see what was happening.  Not too much.  Fall is still slow on it’s entrance, but with the exception for the leaves of the strawberry plant there really is no burst of autumnal color yet.  The hydrangea still have blooms, although most are turning purple or have already died to wispy brown petals.  Most of the plants know that with the recent chilly evenings and cooler days not to produce anymore blooms (except for one rebel daisy, who apparently wants to hedge his bets).  I’m hoping that this fall we get a lot of good color since the last few years have been sort of a disappointing, muddy mix.  I’ll keep my eyes (and my camera) peeled for any good New England fall foliage.

A Morning Walk

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

This morning my husband and I went out for a walk at a local Audubon Sanctuary.  It was glorious.  I wish sometimes that I could capture these moments with you all and post a “scratch-and-sniff” link, because the smell of the woods was heavenly.  Leaves are just beginning to fade and fall, and the mingling of them with mounds of pine needles while baking in the sun was incredible.  The forest was quiet, except for a constant little “pop” and small “thud,” about every minute or so, as the animals start to pluck the acorns from the trees.  The paths were literally covered in acorns as apparently they’ve been at this for some time now.  The only other noise besides their acorn gathering, were our footsteps and the quiet hum of crickets.  Next time I’ve got to bring my other camera to capture this sound and share it with you all.

3191 ~ Onset of Fall

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Yes, it took me a while… but, I’m finally warming up to the idea that summer is truly over (yes, today’s the first day of fall).  Autumn means chilly nights to spend snuggling by the fire, sleeping peacefully with cool air at your face but staying toasty under thick covers, making warm bread and hot soups, picking apples and pumpkins and drinking hot cider, and enjoying the colorful foliage.  Stephanie’s posting from this past week on 3191 Miles Apart really got me excited.  The photos conveyed autumn’s colors, and more importantly, the feeling of fall.  I knew it would take me a few weeks but finally, I’m ready to let go of summer and embrace fall.

Floris and Jennifer’s Wedding

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I’ve never really been a fan of the color yellow, unless it’s more subdued (not acidic, like a bright lemon yellow).  However, Floris and Jennifer’s Wedding (found via Snippet and Ink) has proved me wrong.  I LOVE the yellow that they used; a bright, cheerful, bold yellow.  They included the color in their floral arrangements, invitations, favors, but also in a homemade photo booth and (get this) a ping-pong table.  If I had a ping-pong table at my wedding reception, I would’ve been so much cooler in my husband’s friends opinion.  I am simply in love with that idea, and in love with this color yellow.  I’m so glad they changed my mind!
